Using diamond bits, his wings were carved to provide further detail. A black onyx eyeball completes this little chickadee. Then the petrified wood was carved out to inset the little bird. The bear is carved from Colorado brown stone hunted up on my hikes. She has black onyx eyes and black granite claws. With granite composite, obsidian, and rock mountains dusted with crushed white agate and marble snow piled high in the crevasses, she saunters down to the meadow below in search of food. Crushed serpentine, tiger eye, and green jade make up the muddier high mountain landscape. While a few persistent green granite trees grow amid the rocky landscape that drops down into a meadow of aventurine, and peridot. A couple of petrified wood logs complete the scene. Rustic resin tiles frame the work. While phyllite is a softer stone, easy to cut, it’s also a foliated metamorphic rock that often split into thin layers during the cutting and grinding of each piece, requiring much patience and a little special stone glue to recreate the original piece depth. The silky luster of his honey onyx eye and smooth white marble teeth surrounded by rough phyllite fur gives this direwolf his ferocity and fierceness. The glossy, hard black granite background offers a stunning contrast to the wolf’s coarse phyllite fur.
